mfa info session round 1
Something (something I couldn’t put my finger on) gave the whole event a very New York feel. The people, the art on the walls, even the room itself seemed so culturally eclectic. I looked around at the other people seated in the room and wondered what they were all thinking, what kind of lives they led, whether or not they were better writers than me. I was almost positive that I was the youngest person in the room. I wondered what they thought of me. Maybe I shouldn’t have worn pigtails and big hoop earrings.
More people shuffled in and I caught myself staring at a couple of them. There was the guy with the dreadlocks and about 75 tattoos who was interested in pursuing an MFA in Writing for Children, there were the Asian twins who were both “serious poets looking for a serious program,” and then there was the woman in the front. Ah yes, the woman in the very first seat in the front of the room with her hair pulled back so tight it made it look like she was having a face lift during the information session. Oh, and she was wearing hot pink tights, a lavender spandex dress, and hot pink hoop earrings the size of an infant’s entire head. I missed some of the question and answer session because I couldn’t take my eyes off of her, and not in a good way.
The information that I did get from the session, though, was excellent. The New School seems to have an MFA program that would be a great fit for me. I really like the structure of the classes and their approach to workshops and thesis writing. The faculty members that I met seem both intelligent and genuinely engaged in their teaching and I think I could be happy studying there, if I decide to stay in New York. And also if I get in. I sort of feel like I’m not going to get in anywhere, which is insanely terrifying.
